Antibacterial & Antiprotozoal Medication for Children

Metronidazole Suspension is a broad-spectrum antiprotozoal and antibacterial oral suspension used primarily in children to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It is commonly prescribed for gastrointestinal infections, amoebiasis, giardiasis, and certain dental or gynecological infections.

Composition (per 5 ml):

• Metronidazole – 200 mg

• Flavored oral suspension for easy administration in children

• Supplied as a ready-to-use liquid in a 60ml or 100ml bottle (may vary by manufacturer)

 

Dosage & Administration:

• Dosage depends on the child’s weight, age, and type of infection

• Usually administered 2 to 3 times daily for 5–10 days

• Shake well before use

• Give after food to reduce stomach upset

• Use the provided measuring spoon or oral syringe for accuracy

• Complete the full course, even if symptoms improve early

 

Precautions:

• For oral use only

• Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for 48 hours after the last dose

• Use with caution in children with liver disease

• Inform your doctor of any other medications being taken

• Not effective against viral infections

 

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, metallic taste, or loss of appetite

• Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, or dizziness

• Dark urine (harmless and temporary)

• Rare: allergic reactions, seizures, or nerve issues (in prolonged high doses)

 

Storage Instructions:

• Store at room temperature (15–25°C)

• Do not freeze

• Keep tightly closed and out of reach of children

• Use within 30 days after opening
