Hyoscine Butylbromide Tablets BP 10 mg

Hyoscine Butylbromide (also known as scopolamine butylbromide) is an antispasmodic medicine used to relieve stomach and abdominal cramps, as well as spasms of the digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in these areas, easing pain and discomfort caused by involuntary contractions.

 

Active Ingredient:

• Hyoscine Butylbromide BP 10 mg per tablet

 

Mechanism of Action:

Hyoscine Butylbromide is a muscarinic receptor antagonist. It blocks the action of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that causes smooth muscle contraction. This leads to muscle relaxation, particularly in the gastrointestinal (GI), biliary, and genitourinary tracts.

Dosage:

• Adults and children over 12 years:

  • 1–2 tablets (10–20 mg), up to 4 times daily

  • Maximum daily dose: 80 mg

• Children under 12 years:

  • Not recommended unless specifically advised by a doctor

 

Precautions:

• Not recommended for people with:

  • Glaucoma

  • Myasthenia gravis

  • Enlarged prostate

  • Mechanical bowel obstruction

• Use with caution in elderly patients

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and under medical supervision

• Avoid driving or operating machinery if it causes blurred vision or dizziness

 

Possible Side Effects:

Common:

• Dry mouth

• Constipation

• Blurred vision

• Fast heart rate (tachycardia)

• Difficulty urinating

Less common:

• Skin rash or allergic reaction

• Dizziness or low blood pressure

 

Drug Interactions:

• May enhance the effects of other anticholinergic drugs

• May interact with antihistamines, antidepressants, or antipsychotics

• Can reduce the effectiveness of drugs that require gut movement for absorption
