Ibuprofen 400 mg Tablet

Ibuprofen is a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that provides effective relief from pain, inflammation, and fever. Each tablet contains 400 mg of ibuprofen, making it suitable for moderate pain or when lower doses are not sufficient.

 

Mechanism of Action:

Ibuprofen works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are involved in the production of prostaglandins — substances that cause inflammation, pain, and fever. By reducing prostaglandin levels, ibuprofen helps alleviate symptoms associated with pain and inflammation.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults and adolescents (12 years and older):

  • 400 mg every 6–8 hours as needed

  • Maximum daily dose: 1200–2400 mg (depending on medical advice)

• Children under 12:

  • Use only under medical supervision and based on weight

 Take with food or milk to reduce the risk of stomach irritation.

Contraindications:

Ibuprofen should not be used in individuals who:

• Have a history of allergic reaction to NSAIDs or aspirin

• Have active gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding

• Suffer from severe liver or kidney impairment

• Have uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart failure

• Are in the third trimester of pregnancy (unless advised by a doctor)

 

Precautions:

Use with caution in patients with:

• History of stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal disorders

• Heart disease or hypertension

• Asthma (may trigger bronchospasm in sensitive individuals)

• Kidney or liver disease

• Elderly patients, who may be more sensitive to side effects

 

Drug Interactions:

Ibuprofen may interact with:

• Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) – increased bleeding risk

• Antihypertensives (e.g., ACE inhibitors, diuretics) – may reduce effectiveness

• Other NSAIDs or corticosteroids – increased risk of GI side effects

• Methotrexate – may increase toxicity

• Lithium – may increase lithium levels

 

Possible Side Effects:

Common:

• Stomach pain or discomfort

• Heartburn

• Nausea

Less Common:

• Dizziness or headache

• Rash or allergic reactions

• Fluid retention or swelling

Serious (Rare):

• Gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers

• Liver or kidney damage

• Increased risk of cardiovascular events (especially with long-term use)

 Seek medical help if you notice black/tarry stools, vomiting blood, or severe abdominal pain.
