Magnesium Trisilicate + Aluminium Hydroxide Mixture, 200ml

Magnesium Trisilicate + Aluminium Hydroxide Mixture is a combination antacid formulation used to neutralize stomach acid and relieve symptoms associated with indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, and gastritis. It acts locally in the stomach, offering fast and effective relief from acid-related discomfort.

 

Composition:

Typical formulation per 5 mL (teaspoon) of oral suspension may include:

• Magnesium Trisilicate: 500 mg

• Aluminium Hydroxide: 500 mg

Mechanism of Action:

• Magnesium Trisilicate: Acts as an antacid by reacting with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form magnesium chloride and silica gel. It provides a buffering action and reduces gastric acidity.

• Aluminium Hydroxide: Also neutralizes stomach acid by forming aluminium chloride and water. It has a longer-lasting neutralizing effect and also helps protect the stomach lining.

Together, these compounds work synergistically to:

• Rapidly relieve acid-related discomfort

• Protect the gastric mucosa

• Help reduce symptoms such as bloating, nausea, and abdominal pain

 

Dosage and Administration:

Adults:

• Take 5–10 mL (1–2 teaspoons) orally three to four times daily, preferably after meals and at bedtime.

Children:

• Dosage should be adjusted by a healthcare professional based on age and weight.

Shake well before use. Antacid suspensions may settle over time.

Precautions & Warnings:

• Use with caution in patients with:

  • Kidney impairment (risk of aluminium/magnesium accumulation)

  • Low phosphate levels (aluminium can bind phosphate)

  • Constipation or diarrhea tendencies (magnesium can cause diarrhea; aluminium can cause constipation)

• Avoid prolonged use without medical supervision.

• Should not be taken simultaneously with certain medications, as it may interfere with their absorption (see below).

 

Drug Interactions:

Can reduce absorption of:

• Tetracyclines

• Fluoroquinolones (e.g. ciprofloxacin)

• Iron supplements

• Digoxin

• Levothyroxine

Take other medications at least 1-2 hours before or after taking this antacid to avoid interaction.

Possible Side Effects:

Common:

• Nausea or vomiting

• Constipation (from aluminium)

• Diarrhea (from magnesium)

• Chalky taste

Rare:

• Electrolyte imbalance (especially with long-term use)

• Hypermagnesemia or hyperaluminemia (in renal impairment)
