Diclofenac Gel BP 1.0% is a topical anti-inflammatory medication used to relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation in muscles and joints. It contains Diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), formulated according to the standards of the British Pharmacopoeia (BP). The 30g tube is convenient for targeted, localized treatment of small to moderate areas.
Active Ingredient:
-
Diclofenac Sodium BP 1.0% w/w
Each gram of gel contains 10 mg of Diclofenac Sodium.
Mechanism of Action:
Diclofenac works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are involved in the production of prostaglandins — substances that mediate inflammation, pain, and swelling. By blocking prostaglandin synthesis, Diclofenac helps to reduce local pain and inflammation.
Directions for Use:
-
Apply a small amount (about the size of a cherry or as directed) to the affected area.
-
Gently rub the gel into the skin until absorbed.
-
Use 2 to 4 times daily as needed.
-
Wash hands after application unless treating the hands.
-
Do not cover the treated area with occlusive (airtight) dressings unless advised.
Precautions:
-
For external use only — not to be ingested.
-
Do not use on open wounds, infected skin, or eczema.
-
Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight on treated areas.
-
Use with caution in patients with a history of asthma, peptic ulcers, kidney impairment, or hypersensitivity to NSAIDs.
-
Not recommended during the last trimester of pregnancy.
-
Consult a doctor before use in children under 14 years.
Possible Side Effects:
-
Local skin irritation (redness, itching, rash)
-
Dryness or peeling of the skin
-
Photosensitivity reactions (increased risk of sunburn)
-
Rare systemic effects if used on large areas for a prolonged period
Drug Interactions:
-
Although systemic absorption is low, avoid combining with other oral NSAIDs unless advised by a doctor to minimize the risk of side effects.
Storage:
-
Store below 25°C.
-
Protect from heat and direct sunlight.
-
Keep out of the reach of children.
