Mupirocin Ointment BP 2%

Mupirocin Ointment BP 2% is a topical antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial skin infections. It is highly effective against a range of Gram-positive bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA).

 

Active Ingredient:

• Mupirocin 2% w/w
  (as Mupirocin calcium equivalent to 20 mg mupirocin per gram of ointment)

 

Mechanism of Action:

Mupirocin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme essential for bacterial growth. This action effectively stops bacterial replication, helping the skin heal and reducing the spread of infection.

How to Use:

1. Clean and dry the affected area before application.

2. Apply a small amount of the ointment to the infected area 2–3 times daily.

3. You may cover the area with a sterile dressing if advised.

4. Wash hands thoroughly after use (unless treating the hands).

Treatment is usually continued for up to 10 days, depending on the response.

Precautions:

• For external use only – avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes

• Do not apply on burns or large open wounds unless directed

• Avoid prolonged use to reduce the risk of developing antibiotic resistance

• Not recommended for systemic infections or deep wounds

• Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only under medical advice

 

Possible Side Effects:

Common (mild and localized):

• Itching

• Redness

• Burning or stinging at the site of application

Rare:

• Allergic skin reactions (rash, swelling, hives)

• Superinfection with non-susceptible organisms (fungi or resistant bacteria)

 

Drug Interactions:

• Mupirocin has minimal systemic absorption, so interactions are rare.

• Avoid mixing with other topical medications unless advised by a healthcare provider.

 

Storage:

• Store below 25°C

• Keep the tube tightly closed after use

• Keep out of reach of children
