Sympathomimetic Agent for Hypotension and Bronchospasm

Ephedrine HCl Injection is a sympathomimetic drug used primarily in the treatment of acute hypotension (low blood pressure), especially during anesthesia. It is also used in emergency settings to relieve bronchospasm, nasal congestion, and sometimes in cases of drug-induced hypotension.

Formulation:

• Strength: 30 mg/mL

• Presentation: Clear, colorless sterile solution in 1 mL ampoules or vials

• Route of Administration: Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM)

Pharmacological Class:

• Adrenergic Agonist / Sympathomimetic Agent

• Acts on alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors

Indications:

• Prevention and treatment of intraoperative hypotension, especially during spinal or general anesthesia

• Acute bronchospasm relief (in emergency settings)

• Nasal decongestion (rarely used systemically for this purpose now)

• Supportive therapy in cardiac arrest (as adjunct to CPR)

Mechanism of Action:

Ephedrine works by stimulating adrenergic receptors, increasing cardiac output and peripheral vascular resistance. It causes:

• Vasoconstriction → raises blood pressure

• Positive inotropic and chronotropic effects on the heart

• Bronchodilation via β2 receptor stimulation
